JUST IN: Police ban Sallah durbar over emirate crisis in Kano

From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

Police authorities in Kano have banned Durbar activities during the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in the state.

This was contained in statement issued on Thursday, June 13, by the state commissioner of police, Usaini Gumel.

PEOPLES DAILY reports that Bayero has occupied the mini palace of the Kano emirate council after the state government made a law that scrapped all the five emirates and reinstated emir Sanusi ll.

Bayero had recently released a letter, inviting district heads under his former emirates to come to Kano for Sallah durbar.

He reportedly sent a letter to the Police Command to provide security for him during the durbar, but the Police denied receiving the letter.

In a statement by the spokesman of the Command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa on Thursday, the command said the ban “is part of the commitment to sustenance of the peace by the Kano State Police Command in conjunction with all the relevant security stakeholders.”

“In furtherance, a ban has been placed on ALL DURBAR activities throughout the State for the upcoming Eid-El-Kabir celebrations,” he emphasized.

The measure taken, according to him, is “as a result of series security reports obtained and wide consultations made with relevant security stakeholders to ensure the safety of the larger community.”

He however advised the residents to conduct their normal Eid prayers at the various designated Eid praying grounds, traditionally done in the past.
