The National President of the Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG) has called on all students of the Niger Delta to refrain from participating in protests and to pursue a more comprehensive and constructive approach to addressing the prevailing challenges, in line with the Minister of Interior’s advice.
The group also commended Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for his prompt intervention and his adoption of a holistic approach to avert a nationwide planned protest.
NIDSUG National President Comr. Idowu M. Ayemobuwa, in a statement on Monday, explained that the current economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, particularly the youth, are deeply concerning.
According to him, policies such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira have indeed exacerbated the struggle for daily survival.
Idowu said that while the frustrations are valid and the need for change is urgent, the path to sustainable solutions lies in dialogue and constructive engagement rather than actions that may lead to violence and further hardship.
“We urge our members to heed the recent advice of the Minister of Interior, Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, who has emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding actions that could lead to violence.
“His commitment to the safety of the nation and its people is commendable. His counsel serves as a reminder that constructive dialogue is the best way forward.”
The statement noted that the Minister’s words serve as a stark reminder of the turbulent times experienced during the EndSARS protests.
“While that movement was born out of genuine grievances, it ultimately spiraled into significant violence and destruction, which only compounded the suffering of many Nigerians. We must not allow history to repeat itself.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo for his unwavering dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the Nigerian people.
“His proactive approach and steadfast efforts in fostering peace and stability across the nation are truly commendable.
“The Minister’s leadership has been instrumental in guiding us through challenging times, and his emphasis on constructive dialogue as a means to resolve conflicts resonates deeply with our mission.
“We are grateful for his continued support and guidance in these trying times.
“We urge the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders, including student bodies, to find workable solutions to the issues at hand.
“Protests, while a legitimate form of expression, can often escalate into violence, causing harm to individuals and destruction of property, which only worsens the situation. Constructive engagement, on the other hand, can lead to sustainable solutions and real change.
“As students, our primary focus should be on our education. Participation in protests that could turn violent may jeopardize our academic pursuits and future opportunities.
“Let us channel our energies into academic excellence and constructive advocacy. Education remains our most powerful tool for effecting long-term change, and it is through academic and intellectual rigor that we can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
“We call on the government to consider a holistic approach to policy implementation, taking into account the socio-economic realities of the Nigerian populace,” the statement read in part.
