Over 100 persons purportedly killed by suspected bandits on Thursday night in Ayati, Ukum local government area of Benue State.
It was however gathered that over 30 bodies were recovered from the scene of the incident, barely twenty-four hours later.
Our correspondent gathered from a prominent indigene in the area, who pleaded anonymity that the incident which occured in the night, started when some suspected bandits were said to have received money from some herders to graze their animals in two (2) council wards.
He said they came in conflict with farmers, who reported to government and security was dispatched to intervene, while burning down the herders makeshift tents.
“They (herders) became angry as they claimed to have given money for the land, so they went back to the bandits. So the herders joined hands with the bandits to attack the village and massacre people.
“We have already gathered over 30 corpses. They are still searching for more”, he stated.
While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations’ Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene said, “I am aware there was an attack, and I am waiting for briefing from officers on ground.”.
While the Commissioner for Information Hon. Mathew Aboh who also, hails from Ukum local government area, also corroborated that so far 30 corpses have been recovered from the massacre scene.
Aboh attributed the killing to battle for supremacy by some rival bandit groups reportedly responsible for the incessant killings in the area.
Meanwhile, Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia has condemned the attack, which he described as unprovoked attack on innocent citizens of the state.
The Governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary Kula Tersoo noted that such heinous act has continued in the state despite strong security presence and the regular dialogue sessions his administration has been holding with Stakeholders, and traditional rulers seeking the return of peace in Sankera.
Alia however reiterated his firm determination to continue to use lawful procedures to protect Benue people, particularly Ukum, which has been on the front line of attacks lately.
He called on security personnel to improve their surveillance and also, ensure that vulnerable communities are not left unguarded while the government awaits the Judicial Commission of Inquiry to bring out its findings.
“I condole families that lost their loved ones in the attack. My thoughts of comfort and prayers are with them, and with the entire people of Ukum Local Government”, the Governor said.
