Common Errors In English With Samuel Alimi
As Christmas and New Year celebrations rapidly approach, it is a season filled with joy and memorable moments with friends, colleagues, and family members in various locations. Family members travel from around the world to reunite, while companies and government officials receive bonuses and gifts to enhance their celebrations. Some civil servants and employees in the private sector also receive 13th-month salaries, depending on their employers’ financial capabilities. Schools host end-of-year parties for students, who dress in their finest attire and enjoy entertaining programs with their parents and invited guests. TV and radio stations play festive music on repeat, capturing the spirit of the season, and we also have public holidays to enjoy.
Complement of the season! (Incorrect)
Compliments of the season! (Correct)
While exchanging pleasantries on WhatsApp, Facebook, and other social media platforms, many English users often use the words “compliments” and “complement” interchangeably. The word “complement” sounds ungrammatical, erroneous, and unacceptable to replace “compliments” in this context. To substantiate this lesson, let’s critically examine the following meanings and example sentences drawn from other dictionaries.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “compliment” means “a remark that expresses approval, admiration, or respect.”
Here are some examples in the reference:
She complained that her husband never paid her any compliments anymore.
I take it as a compliment (=I am pleased) when people say I look like my mother.
Are you fishing for (=trying to get) compliments?
Similarly, the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines the word as “a remark (or act) expressing praise and admiration.” In another definition, it is used to “express respect or esteem for.” Its hypernym is “greet.”
According to Collins Dictionary, “If one thing complements another, it goes well with the other thing and makes its good qualities more noticeable”.
Example cited from the meaning:
Nutmeg, parsley and cider all complement the flavour of these beans well.
In addition, the reference explains “If people or things complement each other, they are different, which makes them a good combination”.
Other example sentences provided by the dictionary:
There will be a written examination to complement the practical test.
We complement one another perfectly.
Discreet and Discrete
As an adjective, the word “discreet” means “careful in one’s coversation or actions and being confidential.”
Study the following sentences:
The governor advised the commissioners to be discrete about his plans during official engagements. (Incorrect)
The governor advised the commissioners to be discreet about his plans during official engagements. (Correct)
Professor Femi made some discrete inquiries about the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020. (Incorrect)
Professor Femi made some discreet inquiries about the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020. (Correct)
On the other hand, “discrete” means “separate and distinct”.
These small companies now have their own discrete identity. (Cambridge Dictionary)
Advise and Advice
“Advice” is an uncountable noun, which means “guidance given to someone for future actions; suggestion”.
My friend needs some advice on which car to buy for his mother’s birthday.
Our teachers gave us some good advice before we graduated from secondary school.
Who needs a piece of advice from the betrayal?
I took his advice before I got married to my wife.
I studied English on my father’s advice.
Do you need more advice?
On the advice of her brother, she travelled to Jos for a job with a teaching hospital.
“Advise,” as a verb, is the act of providing guidance or suggestions.
Instances:
Please advise your sister not to marry the man who stole her brother’s money.
The professors advise their students to stay current in their fields.
Eze is advising her father to run for governor in their state.
Musa advises her friends to pray five times daily as Muslims.
