The Annual International Series, held from November 5-7, 2024, is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Lake Chad Region. This essential platform gathers decision-makers, along with local and international development practitioners, to strategise and implement transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing stabilization efforts in this vital area.
The discussions focused on pressing issues such as economic recovery, climate change, and conflict resolution, which have plagued the Lake Chad Region for years. Given these persistent challenges, experts underscore the urgent need to adopt successful international practices while highlighting the importance of local involvement, consensus, and representation in these initiatives.
Recent evaluations have cautioned against the risks of enforcing international best practices without a thorough understanding of local contexts. This disconnect can lead to “isomorphic mimicry,” a troubling phenomenon where solutions intended to help are applied without relevance to the region’s unique challenges.
Enhancing local capacity through positive deviance is increasingly being recognized as a key strategy for impactful change. Empowering communities to take ownership in identifying, designing, and executing projects can lead to significant results. An inspiring example of this approach is the community-led forest preservation initiative in Rivers State.
