Sightsavers empowers 100 women with disabilities in Kano

Sightsavers Nigeria, a Non-governmental has conducted a four-day training for physically challenged women on entrepreneurship skills in Kano state.
The aim of the empowerment programme is to make the beneficiaries become self-reliant, especially in view of their situation.
Speaking during the distribution of start-up package to the beneficiaries at Murtala Mohammed Library Kano, the Sightsavers’ Program Officer on Girls Education, Anita Nchat Kelvin said the aim of the training was to help the young women identify a business and modalities on how to run it successfully.
According to her, the whole idea is to support and empower young women with disabilities, who are among the vulnerable and marginalized people within the society.
Ms Kelvin explained that “because of that, we have taken surveys by asking them questions and realized that they need certain skills, one of which is how to start and sustain a business.”
“Today we are empowering one hundred beneficiaries but we are targeting four hundred in the near future,” she said.
Kelvin disclosed that the start-up parks given to the beneficiaries include Close-up toothpaste, Baby products and cooking materials.
Kelvin further explained that the programme was in partnership with Uniliver and GBF Growing Business Foundation with the implementation by the Sightsavers Nigeria.
Fiddausi Mohammad Umar and Amina Jibrin Shuaibu were among the beneficiaries of the training ,they applauded Sightsavers and other partners for organizing the training and empowerment.
