The Coalition of Youths for Vanguards for Democratic Solidarity (CYVDS) has condemned the continued detention of Alhaji Bello Badejo, a prominent community leader and advocate for peace, calling for his immediate release.
In a statement issued on Saturday, CYVDS chairman Comrade Rabiu Abubakar Mato described Badejo as a “bridge builder” who has worked tirelessly to promote unity and development across diverse communities in Nigeria.
The coalition expressed alarm over Badejo’s arrest on December 9, 2024, by military personnel under what they described as “highly suspicious circumstances.”
According to the CYVDS, Badejo is being held in a “deplorable dungeon-like facility,” with limited access to his family, friends, and medical care.
“This is not only an abuse of his human rights but also an affront to justice, democracy, and the rule of law,” the statement read.
CYVDS highlighted that this was not Badejo’s first detention. Earlier in 2024, he was held for nearly five months without conviction.
The coalition claimed that his efforts to improve his community through projects such as building a mosque and a market have been misconstrued, leading to harassment and unlawful detention.
“Alhaji Bello Badejo is not a terrorist, nor has he been involved in any criminal activities,” CYVDS stated.
“The accusations against him are baseless, and his treatment is completely disproportionate.”
The group called on Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to launch an investigation into the actions of the military personnel involved.
Badejo’s health and well-being remain a significant concern for the coalition. CYVDS alleged that the community leader suffered physical and mental harm during his previous detention, which required medical attention both within and outside Nigeria.
They described the denial of medical care and access to family members as “inhumane” and a violation of his fundamental rights.
CYVDS urged the Federal Government to order Badejo’s immediate release and ensure that no Nigerian is subjected to unlawful detention or mistreatment.
“The CYVDS will continue to advocate for the rights and privileges of Nigerians and will not rest until justice is served,” the statement said .
