The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, said it would continue in the  promotion of the rights of children and women in safeguarding them against gender violence especially in IDP camps.

UNICEF Officer – in-charge/Chief of Field office, Enugu Dr. Shamina Sharmin said this on Thursday in Mbayongu Mega camp at the hand over of safe space and psychosocial materials to four (4) Internally Displaced Persons Camps in Guma and Makurdi local government areas of Benue State.

Dr. Sharmin noted that gender based violence is one of critical issues in camps especially for women and children, maintaining that it is to enhance safety and security of these children.

It said UNICEF is partnering with JAISPI to implement a four(4) month project to support gender violence for these children in these camps.

She said the aim is to increase service for children where they can have pshyco social support, children management and share experience and have a safe room for them.

“And also to mitigate the risk of gender violence and prevent these violence to these camps and other conditions. This project aligns with our mandate and priorities.“
