A Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ court on Friday ordered that six mechanics be remanded in police custody pending hearing in their bail application.
The accused – an electrician, Mustapha Abbas, 39; a trader, Abduljajih Ademola, 32; Chistain Onoja, 29; Emeka Onoja, 34; Onyebuchi Onoja, 26, and Ahmed Oladipo, 35, – are all mechanics.
The accused, who are residents of the FCT, are charged with three counts of joint act, criminal breach of trust and cheating
The Magistrate, Mr. Mohammed Anka, ordered that the accused be remanded in police custody until today (July 14).
He said the court would reconvene on that date to listen to the application and pick a date to open their case for hearing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Francis Tanko, said that on July 3, Tajudeen Ahmed of Flat 5, Kigonna Street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, reported the accused at the Wuse Zone 3 Police Station.
He said Ahmed reported that sometime in June, he gave an Acura Jeep MDX with registration number GW 803 ABC to Abbas (first accused) to sell for N1.5 million.
He said Abbas formed a common intention with the other accused persons while at the shop of one Emeka Onoja at Wuse Market to dishonestly steal the jeep.
According to the prosecutor, the accused persons stole the jeep and handed the keys to one Timothy Imeh of no fixed address who is now at large.
Tanko said that the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 79, 312, and 322 of the Penal code respectively.
If found guilty as charged they shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years or with fine or with both.
The six accused pleaded not guilty to the offences. (NAN)
