Prof. Donatus Adie, from the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has tasked the federal government with the construction of more dams.
Prof. Adie made the call on Monday while presenting a paper titled; The Challenging Climate and Melting Glaciers: Causes and Effect at the National Water Resources Institute Kaduna to celebrate 2025 World Water Day.
According to him, Nigeria has a lot of water resources but not properly managed.
“During the rainy season, we have excess water, hence flooding. During the dry season, we don’t have water. It means we require a lot of dams to hold this water. And when we have dams, we can generate electricity, we can do irrigation farming, and the economy will also improve”.
“Why would you allow 3% of water to go to where you have 97 percent? And that 97 percent is salt water, it is not advisable. Nigeria has to sit up on this issue”.
He also recommended that Nigerians should stop deforestation and control waste management to reduce the effect of climate change.
The Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major General John Ochai, said the only way to tackle climate change is sound environmental management.
