The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has threatened to stop subtle campaigns by political aspirants in Enugu State, saying that time was not rife for such campaigns.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state, Dr Lawrence Azubuike, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu recently that politicians were violating the law barring them from campaigning before 90 days to the elections.
Azubuike said the Commission would meet with the political parties to address the issue and others such as lack of specific contact addresses by some of them.
According to him, the meeting will establish a platform where all the political parties can come out and be fully identified.
“People should not overheat the polity. We always stress to politicians, let us look at the spirit behind this law and try to abide by it.
“Politicians especially should behave with restraints. I am sure they know when they are campaigning publicly and when they are not. We appeal to them to respect the law.
“As a citizen, if you see a poster that you think has violated this rule, then you can call our attention to it. If to us it violates the rule then obviously, we will advise the people behind the poster accordingly.
“Unfortunately in Enugu, the political parties are not as responsive to us as we would expect. As we speak, we have only about four or five political parties with clearly identifiable addresses in Enugu State.
“We want to reach out to establish a platform or a forum where all these political parties can come out and be fully, properly recognised and identified.“
He noted that the commission was currently reviewing its past achievements and short comings with a view to improving the conduct of the 2015 elections.
Azubuike solicited the support of all stakeholders to ensure the success of the forthcoming elections in the state.
He also advised the citizens of the state who were yet to collect their voter cards to visit the INEC office in their local government areas for the collection. (NAN)
