Customs intercepts 420kg of Pangolin scales in Kano

In furtherance to combating illicit international trade in wildlife and related crimes, the Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has intercepted a large quantity of pangolin scales, weighing 420 kilograms in a suburb of Kano metropolis.

The Customs Area Comptroller,  Abubakar Dalhatu disclosed this while addressing journalist in Kano, on Thursday.

He said the operation was carried out by a special team comprising of officers from Nigerian Customs Service, Special Wildlife officers, officers of customs intelligence unit, and custom police unit.

According to Dalhatu, through a combined expertise and vigilance, the operation was successfully executed, which resulted in the interception of a large quantity of Pangolin scales, weighing 420 kilograms within Kano metropolis.

He said the operation, was carried out on Wednesday, July 16th 2025.

Abubakar Dalhat noted that the operation was aimed at combating illicit international trade in wildlife and related crimes, including the protection of Nigeria’s invaluable natural resources for current and future generations.

He stated that the seizure of the pangolin scales not only represents a substantial destruction of criminal supply chains but also sends a strong message to traffickers that wildlife crime will not be tolerated in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world.

“We remain committed to safeguarding our environment and rich wildlife heritage as demanded by Section 55 of the Nigerian Customs Service Act 2023.

“We will continue to increase our surveillance and employ technological tools to combat wildlife crimes effectively. It is our collective responsibility to protect these endangered species for our future generations”, he stated.

The Customs Area controller appreciated the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and support in the operation.

He also thanked international partners, such as the Regional International Liaison Office and Focus Conservation, for their assistance.
