The Nassarawa state Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, has reiterated that Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is very essential for maintaining standards, safeguarding public interest, and ensuring global competitiveness in engineering.

Engr. Sule made this known recently at the 33rd COREN assembly held in Abuja , during his paper presentation titled; “Continuous Professional Development in Engineering: Enforcement, Licensing, and Practice in Nigeria”.

Gov. Sule who was represented by the MD/CEO, Nasarawa State Urban Development Agency (NUDA), Engr. Wada Yahaya Mohammed,said in engineering, CPD embodies a lifelong commitment to learning, skill acquisition, and ethical excellence.

He explained that, “In Nigeria, engineering regulation is primarily governed by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), supported by professional institutions such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and educational bodies including the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

He said despite the existence of a clear regulatory frameworks, compliance and enforcement remain weak”.

In his presentation,he recommended using data from COREN regulatory activities and national policy frameworks.

“The data identifies systemic weaknesses, low compliance, and inadequate collaboration among key stakeholders.”
