A high-powered delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) from 19 Northern States and the FCT has visited Benue State to condemn the recent killings in the state, describing the incident as a national tragedy that demands urgent intervention.
Led by the Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the delegation rejected the narrative of “herders-farmers clashes” as the root cause of the killings, insisting that the reality is far more complex and sinister.
“We must call these killings what they are and face the situation with honesty and courage”, Hayab said.
Furthermore, the delegation reaffirmed Northern CAN’s commitment to sustained advocacy, justice, and peace-building efforts in Benue and beyond.
The delegation was received by Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, who thanked them for their visit and described it as a divine gesture that brought comfort, healing, and spiritual strength to the grieving state.
“The presence of the delegation symbolized Christ sitting with the people of Benue in their moment of pain”, Governor Alia said.
The Governor also lamented the scale of the killings, stressing the sacredness of human life and appealing to the Christian community to remain steadfast in praying for the peace of Benue and Nigeria.
