Efforts to strengthen the blood system in Yobe State received a fresh boost following renewed commitment to revamp blood services in Nangere–Potiskum and its environs.
Spearheading this drive is the member representing Nangere/ Potiskum Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hajiya Fatima Talba, who has initiated strategic engagements to ensure the state benefits from ongoing reforms in the national blood system.
The renewed momentum followed a recent working visit by the lawmaker accompanied by the Chairman of Nangere Local Government, Hon. Samaila Musa, to the Director-General of the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), Professor Saleh Yuguda, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
During the visit, Professor Yuguda expressed the agency’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the availability of safe and adequate blood across Nigeria, including underserved areas like Nangere and Potiskum. He noted that the NBSA was intensifying efforts within its mandate to support the health targets of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Our goal is to build a safe, efficient, and accessible national blood system that leaves no one behind,” Professor Yuguda said. “We welcome partnerships and advocacy from leaders like Hon. Talba who are bringing local priorities into national focus.”
Hon. Talba, in her remarks, said the visit was aimed at fostering collaboration that would address long-standing gaps in Yobe’s health infrastructure, particularly in emergency blood availability for pregnant women and children.
Residents in the area have faced recurrent challenges in accessing timely blood transfusion services, especially in cases of maternal emergencies, accidents, and other life-threatening conditions. Stakeholders say that the renewed engagement between local leaders and the NBSA offers a promising pathway to redress these gaps.
The meeting is part of a broader strategy by the NBSA to decentralize blood services and build sustainable partnerships with subnational actors and legislators.
