The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on the Federal Government to take swift and decisive action following the devastating floods in Niger State that have claimed more than 160 lives.
In a statement on Tuesday and signed by its spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the Forum expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, and damage to vital infrastructure.
The NEF urged the immediate deployment of relief materials, alongside medical and psychosocial support for the victims and their families.
“This is not just a humanitarian obligation but a national emergency requiring coordinated intervention,” the Forum stated.
The group stressed the importance of working closely with the Niger State Government to ensure that aid reaches those most in need and to lay the groundwork for long-term recovery.
Beyond the immediate crisis, the Forum called for a full investigation into the root causes of the flooding, including expert assessments of water management systems, drainage infrastructure, and emergency response mechanisms.
“The findings must inform a national flood mitigation strategy tailored specifically to the vulnerabilities of Northern Nigeria,” NEF noted.
To prevent future disasters, the Forum recommended urgent investment in modern flood control infrastructure, the expansion of drainage networks, reinforcement of riverbanks, and the introduction of early warning systems.
They also emphasised the need for public education and local preparedness in flood-prone regions to reduce future casualties and damages.
“This painful tragedy is not an isolated incident,” NEF warned. “It echoes previous floods across the North, underlining a troubling pattern of recurring natural disasters.”
The Forum linked the disaster to broader challenges including climate change, weak environmental planning, and inadequate urban management.
As the scale of destruction continues to mount, the NEF called for a “robust, coordinated, and sustained response at the highest levels of government.”
The statement concluded with a message of solidarity, reaffirming the Forum’s commitment to the protection of Nigerian lives and livelihoods.
