Land degradation, unsafe chemical use threaten people’s livelihood – Kano Commissioner

Kano state Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim jas expressed concern about land degradation, unsafe chemical use and climate risks, saying the factors are a challenge to people’s livelihood in the state.
Speaking at a stakeholder’s engagement on Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture, organized by Surge Africa, HOMEF, and the GMO-Free Nigeria Alliance in Kano on Tuesday, Dr Hashim said agriculture is central to the people’s lives, but the state still face challenges of land degradation, unsafe chemical use, and climate risks.
“Our responsibility is to ensure food production does not compromise the environment or public health.
“Under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano State is driving policy based reforms.
“These efforts show that we can restore land, improve soil fertility, and strengthen livelihoods at the same time,” he said.
The Commissioner disclosed that together with civil society, farmer associations, and development partners, the government would continue to expand sustainable agriculture in Kano, noting that; “because this is not a side conversation, it is central to our food security, environment, and public health.”
