African Chiefs of Defence Staff have unanimously reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration, declaring their unity as the most potent weapon against a range of modern threats including terrorism, piracy, cyber warfare, and other forms of aggression.
The declaration was made at the conclusion of a landmark summit in Abuja, which saw 37 defence chiefs converge to strategize on a unified security framework for the continent.
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, speaking at the closing ceremony, underscored the summit’s success in reinforcing cooperation. He highlighted key areas of focus, including intelligence sharing, joint training exercises, enhanced border security, and the promotion of indigenous innovation in defence technologies.
The summit, inaugurated by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, addressed a broad spectrum of security challenges.
A central outcome of the meeting was the resolution to bolster maritime security across African waters, which are increasingly under threat from piracy and illegal activities.
The defence chiefs also committed to promoting public-private partnerships to leverage external expertise and resources for defence initiatives.
In a forward-looking move, the attendees resolved to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their defence strategies, recognizing its potential to enhance situational awareness, operational efficiency, and threat analysis.
Furthermore, to institutionalize these collaborative efforts, the defence chiefs agreed to make the summit an annual gathering under the auspices of the African Union (AU), ensuring sustained dialogue and progress on continental security matters.
The summit’s resolutions signal a new era of proactive and unified security efforts in Africa, moving beyond traditional military cooperation to embrace a holistic approach that includes technology, economic partnerships, and strategic institutionalization.
