The national leadership of the Accord Party has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of attempting to influence the outcome of the August 15 Osun State governorship election through the alleged freezing of the state government’s accounts.
The party described the action as unconstitutional, illegal and politically motivated, alleging that it formed part of a broader plan to weaken the administration ahead of the poll.
National Chairman of Accord, Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, made the allegations in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He claimed the anti-graft agency acted without obtaining a court order because it knew such approval would not have been granted.
“The arbitrary freezing of the Osun State Government accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship election is an injustice, illegality, impunity and recklessness that shall not stand,” Mgbudem said.
He added, “This unconstitutional action of the EFCC shall be challenged in court as the temple of justice and the last hope of all aggrieved citizens.”
The party alleged that the EFCC and the police were working to frustrate government activities in Osun State in favour of the opposition All Progressives Congress.
“It is obvious that the EFCC is acting a script along with the police in the state to paralyse and frustrate government activities to pave the way for the opposition APC. The timing of this grand plot to destabilise the state ahead of the governorship poll is evident,” he said.
Accord further alleged that its members and supporters had been subjected to harassment, intimidation, arrests and detention in Osun, Abuja and Nasarawa states.
The party claimed the actions had heightened political tension in the state and raised concerns over the neutrality of security agencies ahead of the election.
Mgbudem called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure security agencies conduct themselves professionally and impartially before, during and after the governorship election.
“Election ought to be the beauty of democratic governance and not a war front. There is no need for the rule of might in citizens’ quest for political participation,” he said.
He urged the President to direct security agencies, particularly the police and the EFCC, to avoid actions capable of undermining the credibility of the election.
The party also demanded the unconditional release of its members and supporters allegedly detained in Abuja, Osun and Nasarawa states.
It insisted that citizens must be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to freely choose their governor without intimidation or interference.
Accord further alleged that Governor Ademola Adeleke remained the preferred candidate of the people and expressed confidence that he would secure re-election.
Meanwhile ,The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has directed that no money be withdrawn from the Osun State Government’s statutory allocation account as part of an ongoing investigation.
A letter dated August 5, 2026, and signed by the Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Adenike Babalola, for the Director of Investigation, instructed the bank to place a post-no-debit restriction on the account pending the conclusion of the probe.
The letter, referenced 3000/EFCC/ABJ/HQ/PFS/TA/OSUN/VOL.17/666, was addressed to the Managing Director of First Bank, with attention to the Chief Compliance Officer.
It identified the affected account as “Osun State Government Statutory Allocation” with account number 2017170947.
