Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) has called on private sector to invest in sustainable practices and support green innovations in the country.
The NES President Dr Efegbidiki Okobia made the appeal at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja
to mark its 40th anniversary and
preparation to host the society 34th National Conference and 35th Annual General Meeting from Oct. 22 to Oct. 25 in Abuja.
The theme for the 34th National Conference is tagged : “Sustainable Cities with Smart Solutions in Africa:
The Place of Environmental Management and Social Justice” .
The keynote speaker is Sarah Mukherjee MBE CEO Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP)
formerly IEMA UK.
The conference will bring together
experts, policymakers, industry
players, banks executives, environmental regulators, stakeholders legislator among many others .
He said NES had, over the past four decades, played active roles in local, national, regional and international environmental programmes, provided expert opinions on critical policies and served as a rallying point for advocacy.
He outlined NES as Nigeria’s foremost environmental professional body and watchdog, with a mission to promote understanding and conservation of natural ecosystems, encourage global partnerships, and improve environmental quality.
“Our 40th anniversary is not just a celebration of longevity; it is a moment of deep reflection on our achievements, our challenges, and our renewed commitment to Nigeria and the global south,”the president added.
The president called on government authorities to continue engaging with it as a critical partner in environmental planning and implementation.
Dr. Okobia appealed to the media to amplify environmental messages and hold institutions accountable.
Meanwhile, He also urged the general public to embrace environmentally responsible lifestyles and actively
participate in conservation and environmental sustainability efforts.
“To our young environmentalists and students. We urge you to remain passionate and
committed, for the future of our planet lies in your hands”.
