Kaduna youths seek greater inclusion in State contracts

Some Kaduna youths have demanded a more active role in the state’s contracting space, calling for greater inclusion in public procurement.
The demand was made at the launch of the Students/Youths Community of Practice on Open Contracting, organized by the Kaduna State Public Procurement Authority (KADPPA).
The young participants insisted that: Youth-led businesses should become frontline suppliers, Procurement students should be absorbed into agencies, Special grants and contracts should be created for youth startups, Mentorship and capacity-building programs should be provided and Greater involvement in procurement oversight and budget planning is necessary
The Director General of KADPPA, Engr. Sanusi Yero, assured that the state has already reserved portions of contracts for women, youths, and persons with disabilities.
He also revealed that registration costs and other entry fees have been slashed, and a dedicated desk has been established to guide young entrepreneurs.
Speaking earlier, Stephen Waya, OGP Citizens’ Co-Chair on Open Contracting Data Standard (OCDS) and Open Contracting 4 Infrastructure Data Standard (OC4IDS), hailed the launch of Nigeria’s first Students/Youths Community of Practice on Open Contracting as a milestone achievement.
This initiative, according to him, demonstrates the power of co-creation and collaboration between the state government, citizens, and young leaders in promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance.
Waya emphasized that young leaders are the present and future of Kaduna State, and it is heartening to see their enthusiasm and commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in public contracting.
as gathered that the Community of Practice provides a platform for young leaders to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices on open contracting and develop innovative solutions to address the challenges facing the nation.
Waya urged the young leaders to be curious, innovative, and bold in demanding transparency and accountability from those in power.
He emphasized that citizens have the power to shape the future of the nation and that their voices and actions can make a real difference.
Waya also commended the state government for embracing OCDS/OC4IDS standards and recognizing the importance of involving young people in the governance process. He also commended civil society organizations, private sector stakeholders, and citizens who have contributed to this achievement.
