Harām (unlawful) Incomes and Their Implications

Bismillāh-ir-Rahmān-ir-Rahīm. Alhamdulillāh, all praise belongs to Allah who made Halāl (lawful) things clear and Harām (unlawful) things clear, and between them are doubtful matters. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), who warned us about consuming the unlawful and taught us that wealth is either a means of blessings or destruction, depending on its source.

Types of Harām Incomes
1. Ribā (Usury/Interest-based Earnings)
Any income generated from lending money on interest or working directly in interest-based institutions. Allah and His Messenger (SAW) declared war on ribā (Qur’an 2:279). Even small amounts of interest are Harām, whether in giving, taking, writing, or witnessing the transaction.
2. Bribery (Rishwah)
Income earned through giving or taking bribes. The Prophet (SAW) cursed the giver and taker of bribes (Tirmidhī). Bribery spreads corruption, injustice, and denies people their rightful dues.

3. Ghulūl (Embezzlement, Theft, or Misappropriation of Public/Private Wealth)
Taking what is not yours from company, government, or others’ property. Even a naira of stolen wealth may prevent prayers from being accepted until repentance is made.

4. Gambling & Games of Chance (Maysir / Qimār)
Any money gained through betting, lotteries, or speculative games. Allah mentioned gambling alongside alcohol as abominations of Shayhān (Qur’an 5:90).

5. Fraud, Deception, and Dishonesty in Trade
Cheating customers, false weights and measures, lying about quality, hoarding goods to inflate prices. The Prophet (SAW) said: “He who cheats us is not one of us.” (Muslim).

6. Earnings from Harām Goods and Services
Money from selling alcohol, pork, drugs, idols, or facilitating zina (fornication/adultery), music/entertainment that promotes sin, or producing harām content. The Prophet (SAW) said: “When Allah forbids a thing, He also forbids its price.” (Abū Dāwūd).

7. Oppression & Unjust Gains
Forcing workers into unfair conditions, underpaying wages, or exploiting others. The Prophet (SAW) warned that the cries of the oppressed are not veiled from Allah.

Implications of Consuming Harām Wealth

1. Spiritual Consequences
Supplications (duhā) are not accepted if one’s body is nourished with Harām. The Prophet (SAW) mentioned a man who raises his hands to the sky saying “O Lord, O Lord,” while his food, drink, and clothing are from Harām, then how can his duhā be accepted? (Muslim). Barakah (blessings) is removed from life, wealth, and children.

2. Worldly Consequences
Anxiety, lack of satisfaction, and constant problems despite having money. Wealth disappears quickly through calamities, illnesses, or endless expenses.

3. Hereafter Consequences
On the Day of Judgment, people will be asked about their wealth: “From where did you earn it, and on what did you spend it?” (Tirmidhī). Consuming Harām knowingly without repentance is a cause for severe punishment, possibly even Hellfire, unless Allah forgives.

Practical Advice
Strive for Halāl income, even if it is small. The Prophet (SAW) said: “The best food a man eats is that which he earns with his own hands.” (Bukhārī). Avoid doubtful matters, for safety of your dīn and honour. Make tawbah immediately if you have consumed Harām, and replace it with Halāl.

Trust in Allah’s provision (rizq). He has guaranteed sustenance, so earning through sin is a sign of weak īmān.

Parents beware: Feeding children with Harām wealth poisons their spirituality, making them disobedient and hard-hearted. Remember, wealth is a test. The Prophet (SAW) said: “A time will come upon people when a man will not care from where he gets his money, whether from Halāl or Harām.” (Bukhārī). We are already in those times. Therefore, let us be among those who protect our earnings, purify our sustenance, and prepare for the day when wealth will be of no benefit except that which was pure and used for Allah’s sake and remember to pay d correct zakat as and when due.
May Allah grant us d best of guidance and admit us into aljanatu firdausi without reckoning amin.
