INEC confirms Umaru for Niger Senate by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the nomination of Barr. David Umaru as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the August 30 by-election for Niger East senatorial district.

The commission has issued a letter of acknowledgment of the nomination following the submission of INEC Form c and other relevant nomination documents in respect of the candidate by the national leadership of APC.

The acknowledgment letter, signed by one, Olawole Dawodu, a legal officer with the INEC headquarters is dated August 8, 2014.

Barr. Umaru emerged as the candidate of the APC at the party’s primary election held on Thursday at Gidan Matasa, Minna. He polled 248 To defeat his only opponent, Bala Adamu Kuta, who scored 62.

Speaking on his electoral victory, Barr. Umaru thanked the delegates and party members for the massive support given to him, urging them to work hard to ensure success at the general election.

While promising to give selfless service if elected, he extended hands of fellowship to Kuta and equally urged him to join hands in working for the interest of the party, the state and the entire country.

Kuta, in his response, promised to work with the winner for the success of the party at the bye-election, while calling on members to shun any act that would cause disunity in the interest of the party.

Umaru had contested for the Niger governorship in 2007 and 2011 elections on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), respectively.

Party leaders in the state had in the build-up to the by-election persuaded him to drop his governorship ambition and join the senate race after the death of Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta.
