Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned supporters against online attacks targeting him and the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warning that such actions are counterproductive.
Atiku’s reaction followed a post on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as Everest, who accused supporters of the former vice president of insulting Peter Obi while expecting Atiku to be spared criticism. The comment, which suggested a double standard among Atiku’s supporters, gained widespread attention on the platform.
“Atiku’s people want to insult Peter Obi without Atiku getting the heat back. Maybe they feel Atiku deserves respect and Peter Obi does not,” the user wrote.
Responding publicly, Atiku distanced himself from such behaviour and condemned insults directed at either leader. He warned that personal attacks among opposition supporters weaken unity and undermine efforts to build a credible alternative to the ruling party.
“Dear Everest, anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the Coalition ADC, or for Nigeria and Nigerians,” Atiku said. “The only people who benefit from this kind of civil war are the APC urban bandits who want to maintain the satanic status quo. We are better together.”
Atiku’s remarks highlight renewed calls for cooperation among opposition figures and their supporters, particularly amid ongoing discussions about future political alliances. He stressed that infighting only strengthens political opponents and distracts from the broader goal of national development.
