The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Taiken Security Services Limited, Mr Taiwo Adedoja, has urged engineers to take crime prevention and security management seriously to reduce losses, protect lives and improve productivity.
Adedoja made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while delivering a paper at the January general meeting of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abuja Branch.
His presentation was titled Crime Prevention and Security Management in a Workplace.
He said crime remained inevitable in every society but stressed that engineers occupied a strategic position in national development and economic growth.
According to him, engineers are the backbone of production in sectors such as construction and manufacturing, yet many lack adequate knowledge of security and safety management.
“Engineers are the hub of a nation. They are economic boosters and the foundation of any economy,” he said. “Without good engineers and technicians, a country cannot expand its production.”
Adedoja lamented that poor security awareness had led to avoidable deaths, losses and stalled projects across several industries.
He noted that many professionals often overlooked security considerations until incidents escalated beyond control, leading to huge financial losses.
“Just because of security lapses, look at what we are losing and what we are spending,” he said. “Things that could have been managed early have now grown beyond us.”
The Taiken boss said the lecture was aimed at making engineers more proactive and security-conscious in their daily operations.
He expressed confidence that improved understanding of security management would translate into better business outcomes.
“With what we have taught them, they will practise it. There will be maximisation of profit, reduction of losses and safety of lives,” Adedoja said.
He added that reducing crime would also create a more peaceful and conducive working environment for businesses to thrive.
Adedoja emphasised that security and safety were closely linked, especially in construction and engineering-related activities.
He warned that unsafe acts at worksites, including reckless driving of heavy-duty vehicles, could result in fatal accidents.
“Security and safety are interrelated. Some unsafe acts can cause deaths,” he said. “People should go to work and return home safely.”
He advised engineering firms to engage their drivers, security personnel and staff regularly on safety and security issues.
According to him, effective security management involves identifying risks, managing threats and putting measures in place to prevent losses.
“Security management is about managing your security to reduce losses and maximise profit,” Adedoja said. “If security is well managed, people will be alive and businesses will run smoothly.”
He urged members of the NSE to apply the lessons from the lecture in their workplaces to enhance safety, productivity and sustainability.
