Historical Film Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman Hits Nigerian Cinemas

Date:

Nigerian moviegoers are now seeing Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman, a historical drama adapted from Wole Soyinka’s celebrated play Death and the King’s Horseman. Directed by Biyi Bandele, the film explores a crucial moment in Yoruba tradition, set in the 1940s Oyo Empire.

The story follows Elesin Oba, the king’s horseman, whose sacred duty is to take his own life to accompany his deceased ruler into the afterlife. When Elesin delays his duty due to personal desires, the community faces consequences that test the boundaries of tradition, duty, and moral responsibility.

The cast features Odunlade Adekola, Shaffy Bello, Deyemi Okanlawon, Ogagbe Oghenechovwe Blessing, Omowunmi Dada, Mark Elderkin, Jenny Stead, Jide Kosoko, Kevin Ushi, Langley Kirkwood, and Olawale “Brymo” Olofooro.

Local critics have started sharing their impressions. Veteran reviewer Wilfred Okiche praises the film for its cultural authenticity, describing it as “visually immersive and a faithful reflection of Yoruba traditions.” Isabella Akinbiyi notes that while the pacing is deliberate, the performances are compelling and the attention to historical detail is impressive. Online critic Chidumga Izuzu adds that the film successfully brings a stage classic to the screen while retaining its emotional depth.

Twitter reactions have also been coming in. Some users praise the film’s cultural significance, with one tweeting, “Finally, a Nollywood film that respects our traditions and history. Elesin Oba is a must-watch!” Others note its deliberate pace, tweeting, “Beautiful cinematography, but it’s a slow burn. Not for everyone, but I appreciate the storytelling.” A few younger viewers commented on the performances: “Odunlade Adekola nailed it, and the supporting cast did really well too. 2 Milly Star was a pleasant surprise in the mix.”
