President Julius Maada Bio has called for stronger regional cooperation and international backing to confront rising insecurity and poverty across West Africa.

Bio made the appeal in Freetown during Sierra Leone’s 16th Armed Forces Day celebration, where he led the nation in honouring officers and men of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

The colourful ceremony, marked by a historic military parade, drew top government officials, diplomats and foreign dignitaries. It featured a wreath-laying session for fallen heroes, cultural displays and a march-past that showcased the discipline and resilience of the armed forces.

Speaking at the event, the President stressed that security challenges in the sub-region demand collective action. He urged West African leaders and global partners to strengthen collaboration in order to safeguard peace and promote sustainable development.

In a significant highlight of the ceremony, the Sierra Leonean leader conferred the National Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of Sierra Leone on retired General Martin Luther Agwai for his contributions to peacekeeping and regional security.

Agwai, a former Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria and one-time Force Commander of the African Union–United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, was praised for his leadership and dedication to advancing peace across Africa.
