Eight more members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Adamawa State House of Assembly have defected from the party.
The Speaker, Bathiya Wesley, was among the eight who resigned their membership of the governing PDP during the sitting of the Assembly yesterday, marking three consecutive days of defections after one lawmaker left on Monday, February 23, and six followed on Tuesday, February 24.
The PDP members who defected alongside the Speaker on Wednesday include Moses Yerima Zah, representing Michika Constituency, and Kate Raymond Mamuno, who represents Demsa LGA and serves as the House Majority Leader.
The others are Pwamwakeno Mackondo, representing Numan; Adun John Alaba, representing Uba Gaya Constituency; Bulus Kantom of Shelleng Constituency; Musa Mahmud Kallamu (Mayo Belwa); and Japhet Hammanjabu (Verre).
They announced their decision during Wednesday’s plenary session, citing the crisis in the PDP at the national level as their reason, as those before them had done.
The latest resignations from the PDP had been anticipated, as even voices within the party’s leadership at the state level had hinted at the likelihood that virtually all prominent figures in the PDP would be leaving.
This development comes amid growing certainty that the state governor himself, Rt Hon Ahmadu Fintiri, is on his way out and is widely believed to be heading to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
