Middle-East tension: FG issues security advisory to Nigerians in Iran, Gulf States

Nigerian government has issued security advisory to its citizens in Islamic Republic of Iran and Gulf States following the heightened military action reportedly undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran and retaliatory actions by Iran on targets in some Gulf countries.

In a press statement released in Abuja Saturday, signed by Spokesperson of Nigerian Foreign Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, it note that Nigerian Government was closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the Middle East, specifically regarding the military action reportedly undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in the Islamic Republic of Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Iran on targets in some Gulf countries.

According to the statement, “Given the heightened state of tension and the potential for further escalations, the Ministry is issuing the following advisory to all Nigerian citizens residing in or currently visiting Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries.

“Maintain Constant Vigilance: All Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries are advised to remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times. Avoid areas known to be strategic, military, or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints.

“Limit Movement: It is strongly recommended that Nigerians restrict non-essential movement and travel within the countries until the security situation becomes clearer and stabilizes. Avoid large gatherings and public demonstrations.

“Follow Local Directives: Citizens are strongly advised to strictly comply with all security and safety directives issued by the local authorities to ensure their safety. Remember that cooperation with local law enforcement is paramount for safety.

“Stay Informed: Keep abreast of news and updates from reliable international and local news sources. Be cautious of misinformation and rely on official channels for accurate and critical safety information.

“Establish Communication with the relevant Embassies: The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and affected neighbouring Gulf countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE and Saudi Arabia are on high alert to provide required consular assistance and facilitate easy communication” the statement read in part.

While stating the Foreign Ministry continuous assessment of the situation with the aim of providing further updates as necessary, the statement wishes to assure the general public that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remain the top priority of the Federal Government.

However, Government of Nigeria wishes to call on parties to the conflict to de-escalate the crisis by returning to the negotiation table for the interests of global peace and coexistence.
