2027 elections: Taraba gov’t direcsts official planning to contest to resign

The Taraba state government has directed all political appointees and public servants intending to contest in the forthcoming 2027 general elections to as a matter of urgency resign their appointments in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The directive was contained in a statement released over the weekend by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters and Special Duties.
The government stressed that the Electoral Act clearly mandates that any public office holder seeking elective office must step down within the legally prescribed timeframe before participating in party primaries or any stage of the electoral process.
Signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters and Special Duties, Josiah Sabo Kente, the government described the resignation requirement as more than a routine administrative step, noting that it serves as a vital safeguard to ensure fairness, transparency and equity in the electoral system.
The government also warned that failure to comply with the directive could lead to legal consequences, including possible disqualification by relevant electoral authorities.
The administration of Agbu Kefas, according to the statement, reiterated its commitment to constitutional governance and democratic best practices. It emphasized that Taraba state remains determined to uphold political discipline and strict adherence to extant electoral laws.
The government also expressed appreciation for the commitment and service of public officials across the state, wishing those with political aspirations success in their ambitions, provided they operate within the confines of the law.
