Nupe elders in Kaduna have raised concerns regarding the potential decline of the Nupe language, urging parents to prioritize teaching their children their native tongue to ensure its preservation.
The call to action was issued during a gathering of Nupe leaders in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area, where community stakeholders met to celebrate the conclusion of the Ramadan and Sallah festivities.
Alhaji Sidi Aliyu Yahaya, Chairman of the Nupe Foundation for Peace and Unity, Kaduna State Chapter, emphasized that language is the foundation of identity and that failure to pass it on to younger generations could threaten cultural continuity.
“It is a concern when a child grows up unable to speak their native language or understand their traditions.
“Our children must not lose their roots. Parents have a duty to ensure that the Nupe language is spoken at home so that our heritage remains vibrant”, Yahaya stated.
The meeting, which convened elders, scholars, and representatives of the Nupe community, underscored the importance of preserving the Nupe language and cultural identity, particularly within the diverse setting of Kaduna State, where many Nupe families have settled.
Religious scholar, Sheik Muhammad Sallah Agaie echoed Yahaya’s sentiments.
While praising the Nupe people for their contributions to both modern and Islamic education, he cautioned that academic and professional success should be coupled with a commitment to one’s community.
“The Nupe people are a united family, regardless of where they reside.
“We must strengthen our bonds and preserve our language to maintain our unity and identity”, Agaie said.
Attendees at the meeting reinforced the message, emphasizing that cultural heritage—specifically language—plays a crucial role in social cohesion.
They agreed that preserving the Nupe language is essential for maintaining identity, values, and continuity across generations.
The Nupe leaders also used the occasion to advocate for peaceful coexistence among all ethnic and religious groups in the state, reiterating that the Nupe people are committed to maintaining harmonious relations with their neighbors.
