Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yamman Sokoto) has called for stricter adherence to professional and ethical standards in pharmaceutical practice, stressing the need to strengthen drug safety and public health protection in Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.
Wamakko made the call when members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Sokoto State chapter, led by Chairman Pharmacist Aminu Ahmad Biambo, paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Gawon Nama
Highlighting the critical role of pharmacists in healthcare delivery, the senator underscored the importance of proper drug regulation, safe dispensing, and the rational use of medicines.
He urged practitioners to remain committed to pharmacovigilance and uphold global best practices.
He also reiterated the need for sustained public awareness on the dangers of illicit drug use, self-medication, and the spread of counterfeit and substandard medicines, pledging continued support for initiatives aimed at safeguarding public health.
In his remarks, Biambo said the visit was to appreciate ongoing efforts to strengthen pharmaceutical practice in the state. He noted that investments in training and education including sponsorship of pharmacy studentshave helped address the shortage of qualified professionals in Sokoto.
The PSN chairman further disclosed that the association is intensifying campaigns on drug abuse prevention, proper storage and handling of medicines, and the risks posed by expired or falsified drugs.
He added that continuous professional development programmes and targeted sensitization for Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) remain key strategies in curbing the circulation of unsafe drugs.
Biambo also advocated the establishment of a drug information centre in the state to enhance access to accurate data on approved medicines.
The visit featured the presentation of an award recognising contributions to the development of pharmaceutical practice in Sokoto, with senior members of the council, including Pharmacist Ibrahim Binji, in attendance.
