The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has announced sweeping reforms and stricter accountability measures aimed at repositioning the Nigeria Police Force, declaring that a “new era” of policing has begun in the country.
Disu made this known during his address at the second edition of the National Police Day grand parade held at Eagle Square, where he called on officers to uphold professionalism, discipline, and transparency in the discharge of their duties.
Delivering his first national address since assuming office, the police chief described the moment as a defining one for both the Force and the nation, stressing the need for policing to evolve in response to contemporary security challenges.
He warned that misconduct would no longer be tolerated, emphasizing that rank or status would not shield any officer found culpable.
“We must rise above indiscipline and every action that diminishes the honour of this uniform,” Disu said, adding that accountability under his leadership would be “firm, fair, and without exception.”
The IGP also assured personnel of improved welfare, enhanced training, and better operational support, noting that professionalism must be backed by dignity and adequate resources.
Addressing Nigerians, Disu acknowledged the strained relationship between the police and the public, pledging deliberate steps to rebuild trust and foster cooperation.
“You will see a Police Force that is more accountable, more professional, more disciplined, and more human,” he said.
He outlined ongoing reform initiatives, including strengthened internal disciplinary systems, increased investment in technology, and a shift toward intelligence-led and community-based policing.
Disu further stressed that security is a shared responsibility, calling for greater collaboration between citizens and law enforcement agencies.
The police chief paid tribute to fallen officers, describing their sacrifice as a lasting obligation on the nation, and assured their families of continued recognition and support.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for institutionalising National Police Day, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening the Force and advancing reform efforts.
Disu acknowledged the contributions of the Armed Forces, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media, and private sector partners in promoting national security.
Reaffirming his vision, he stated that the Nigeria Police Force would prioritise integrity, enforce discipline, and rebuild public confidence through consistent action.
“Let history record that we chose reform over rhetoric and service over self,” he said.
The event concluded with a renewed call for unity and collective commitment to building a safer Nigeria.
