Residents of Omuafor community in Aboh-Mbaise, Owerri, Imo State, have received a major boost in access to clean water following the commissioning of a solar-powered borehole by LG Electronics Nigeria.
The project, unveiled at a ceremony attended by community leaders and the traditional ruler, marks the company’s first renewable energy-driven water intervention in South-Eastern Nigeria.
Speaking during the event, the Head of Corporate Marketing, LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr Paul Mba, said the initiative was aimed at addressing the challenge of water scarcity while promoting environmental sustainability.
He said, “Access to clean water remains essential to healthy living and inclusive development. By integrating solar technology into the borehole system, we are ensuring uninterrupted water supply while reducing environmental impact.”
Mba added that the project reflects LG’s commitment to improving lives beyond its products through sustainable innovations.
The solar-powered facility, which operates independently of grid electricity, is expected to enhance hygiene, reduce the risk of water-borne diseases and ease the burden of sourcing potable water, particularly for women and children.
In his remarks, the Eze of Omuafor Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Dr Eze Justin Nwaneri, described the project as historic and impactful.
“This solar-powered borehole is a welcome development for our community. Access to clean water is vital, and we commend LG for delivering a sustainable solution that will benefit generations,” he said.
Also speaking, LG’s Public Relations and Sustainability Manager, Mr Moses Osime, said the project aligns with the company’s Environmental, Social and Governance strategy focused on sustainable development and shared value.
He noted that LG would continue to explore opportunities to expand similar initiatives across Nigeria.
On his part, the community chairman, Mr Collins Uche, expressed gratitude to the company, noting that the project would significantly improve living conditions.
“The impact of this project cannot be overstated. It will improve health, reduce hardship and support overall wellbeing in our community,” he said.
The initiative underscores growing collaboration between corporate organisations and traditional institutions in delivering grassroots development, particularly in underserved communities.
