Protest in Kaduna over El-Rufai’s continued detention

Supporters of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, trooped out on Tuesday in solidarity with him over his continued detention.

The protesters displayed placards with various expressions demanding for his release.

Although security was mounted around key areas of the city and some areas completely blocked, several residents still came out to demonstrate in solidarity with the former governor.

“Despite tight security and blockage to access, Kaduna residents came out to show El-Rufai their support and solidarity,” one of the protesters said.

He claimed that security agents have arrested some of the protesters, who were later released. There has been no official comment on this or independent confirmation of the arrest.

El-Rufai appeared before the Kaduna State High Court today for his bail application.

Justice Darius Khobo, who was expected to deliver judgement on the former governor’s bail application, adjourned the bail hearing to the first week of June, 2026.

The defendant arrived the court on Tuesday morning alongside operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Speaking with journalists after the court session, Ukpon Akpan, counsel to el-Rufai, kicked against the repeated adjournment of the bail hearing by the presiding judge, describing it as politically motivated.

The judge had fixed April 14, for the hearing of the bail application, but was not in court when the defendant appeared.
