ASUSS FCT urges parents to return students to class amid NUT strike

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), FCT Chapter, has implored parents in the Federal Capital Territory to release their children for academic activities, ensuring students do not miss crucial preparations as West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams begin.
The call was made on Tuesday in Abuja, following a strike action embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, which has disrupted learning in various parts of the territory.
The Chairman of ASUSS FCT, Comrade Julius Ogundiran, clarified that the grievances cited by the NUT do not apply to secondary school staff.
He noted that key demands—including wage awards and teacher vacancies—have already been addressed for the secondary cadre.
“The issues NUT members are agitating for do not affect secondary school staff.
“Matters regarding primary school teachers’ welfare fall under the jurisdiction of the Area Councils, not the secondary school structure”, he noted.
He further maintained that while some broader issues remain under discussion, they have received significant attention from the FCT Administration.
Ogundiran listed several secondary schools currently in session and provided assurances to parents that academic work is proceeding safely and normally.
Addressing recent controversy, the Secretary of ASUSS, Peter Afolayan, debunked rumors questioning the union’s legitimacy.
He confirmed that the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools is a duly registered entity and an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), mandated to protect the interests of secondary school educators.
Students, particularly those sitting for WAEC, are urged to return to avoid academic setbacks.
