The Grassroots Mobilisers for Better Nigeria Initiative has thrown its weight behind the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Mainasara Kogo Umar, calling for restraint and adherence to due process.
The group said the tribunal chairman, like any public officer, deserves the opportunity to respond through appropriate legal and administrative channels.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the group’s leader, Amb. Dr Fatima Mohammed Goni, warned that actions outside due process could undermine confidence in the justice system.
She noted that recent reports circulating online had raised concerns about the leadership of the tribunal, but stressed that such issues must be handled with caution and responsibility.
According to her, the matter goes beyond an individual and touches on a broader democratic principle of how claims are treated before they are verified and adjudicated.
The organisation maintained that accountability remains the bedrock of democratic governance and that public officials must be subjected to proper and transparent investigations where necessary.
It, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions without due process, emphasising that allegations do not amount to proof.
The group warned against what it described as trial by media, noting that public discourse must not replace lawful procedures.
It added that the Code of Conduct Tribunal plays a strategic role in Nigeria’s governance framework and should not be weakened by unverified narratives.
The group urged Nigerians to allow due process to take its course, stressing that preserving institutional integrity is vital to sustaining public trust.
