Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has debunked as ‘untrue’, claim that it is attempting to impose a governorship candidate on the party.
The party held a stakeholders meeting on Sunday at the residence of the immediate past Governor Chief Samuel Ortom with the aspirants.
Dan Nyikwagh State PDP Secretary told Peoples Daily on Monday that the party asked the aspirants to continue to consult amongst themselves and see if they can pick one persons as consensus. But in the event this is not possible, they will all go to the primaries.
Dan said the party is still awaiting the NWC to spell out the mood of primaries, intimating that there are 9 aspirants jostling for Governorship ticket from the PDP.
“It is absolutely not true that the party wants to impose any aspirant as consensus candidate.
“ We just advised them to continue to talk to themselves and see if they can agree and bring one person as consensus candidate but where they can’t, then the only option left is to go to the primaries”, he stated.
Recall that, at an expanded caucus meeting in Makurdi, Chief Ortom had regretted imposing former Speaker of the State House of Assembly Titus Uba as candidate of the party in 2025 even after he emerged fourth at a mock primary.
Ortom vowed that such mistake would not repeat in 2027, insisting that a fair playing field will be given to all aspirants.
