The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has called for stronger protection and improved welfare for journalists in Nigeria, as the world marks World Press Freedom Day.
In a statement issued on Saturday, CITAD reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of media professionals across the country.
The organisation stressed that a free and independent media remains vital to democracy, accountability and informed citizen participation.
However, it expressed concern that journalists in Nigeria continue to face harassment, arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention and intimidation while carrying out their duties.
“These actions undermine democratic values and erode public trust in institutions,” the statement noted.
CITAD further decried what it described as increasing cases of repression against journalists by both state and non-state actors. It condemned such violations and urged authorities to uphold press freedom as enshrined in the Constitution and recognised international human rights standards.
Beyond issues of safety, the organisation highlighted the need to improve the welfare and working conditions of journalists. It pointed out that poor remuneration, precarious employment conditions and lack of institutional protection leave many media practitioners vulnerable to undue influence, thereby compromising their independence.
“Addressing these challenges is critical to strengthening Nigeria’s media landscape,” CITAD stated.
The group also emphasised the growing link between press freedom and digital rights in the modern era. According to CITAD, the ability to access and share information online without fear is essential for promoting knowledge and civic engagement.
It warned that practices such as censorship, surveillance and online harassment pose serious threats to both press freedom and the broader right to information.
CITAD, therefore, called for an immediate end to the harassment and detention of journalists, improved welfare and protection for media practitioners, and stronger safeguards for digital rights.
“A society that silences its journalists risks weakening its democracy,” the organisation said, adding that it stands in solidarity with journalists across Nigeria.
