Some winners of the recently concluded primary elections of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have cried out over what they described as undue delay in issuing the Certificates of Return to successful candidates, alleging that this may be part of a plot by the leadership of the ruling party substitute the victorious aspirants for the 2027 general elections.
Investigations have revealed that aggrieved aspirants for different elective positions and from different states accused the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC of planning to use the lacuna to create confusion in the uncertainty within the party, despite the fact that the primaries were long concluded and winners declared by the various primary election committees.
Some of the aggrieved aspirants, who pleaded anonymity, said that the prolonged delay has increased the level of suspicion among party members, especially following recent remarks allegedly credited to some members of the NWC that the party has the final power to determine who eventually emerges as the party’s flag bearer.
The added that the situation is generating tension among the victorious aspirants who are not convinced that the outcome of the primaries may not be changed by the powers that be in abuja.
One of the victorious aspirants said: “We participated in the primaries in good faith, results were announced by the duly constituted primary committees, and winners emerged. But weeks after the exercise, many of us are yet to receive our Certificates of Return.
“What is more troubling is the statement by some NWC members that the party leadership reserves the right to determine who becomes a candidate irrespective of who was declared winner by the chairman of the primary election committee. That statement is dangerous and undemocratic.”
Another aspirant who spoke from one of the South East states alleged that there were ongoing moves to replace some not so favoured aspirants with those he described as having “powerful godfatheres”.
The concerned aspirants further wondered why the party would rush to present the same Certificate of Return to President Bola Tinubu, whose primary election came after their own, while nobody was talking to them in that regards.
“The President has already received his Certificate of Return, so why are others being delayed? The party should not create the impression that some candidates are more valid than others,” one of them stated.
Our checks revealed that the development may trigger legal suits as some of the affected aspirants, were said to be considering legal action should the party fails to stick with those that were declared winners of the primary elections.
When contacted to react to the allegations, the National Publicity Secretary (NPS) of the party, Barr. Felix said he could not respond to that because he was not in the office because of the public holidays.
However, another party source who refused to be mentioned denied any knowledge of the alleged substitutions, adding that the party is still compiling the names of the victorious aspirants, state by state.
