The Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government Council in Benue State, Amb. Melvin Ejeh, has rewarded a student, Imoni Adoga Joshua, with a cash gift of ₦1 million for his outstanding performance in a national essay competition.
Joshua, a student of Methodist High School, Obagaji-Agatu, emerged as the second runner-up in the prestigious national contest, which featured 388 participants from across the country.
The student earned national recognition for his creativity, critical thinking, and exceptional writing skills, securing a place among the top three finalists in the highly competitive competition.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Peoples Daily, Ejeh expressed delight over Joshua’s achievement, describing the feat as a source of pride to Agatu Local Government Area and Benue State.
The council chairman said the cash reward was aimed at encouraging academic excellence and motivating other students to embrace hard work and dedication in their studies.
He commended Joshua for his brilliance, discipline, and exemplary representation of Agatu on the national stage.
Ejeh further disclosed that during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration held on May 27, he also donated ₦500,000 to outstanding schools within the local government area as part of efforts to promote educational development.
The student’s achievement has continued to attract commendations from education stakeholders, community leaders, youth groups, and residents, who described it as a proud milestone for Agatu and the Idoma nation.
Residents and stakeholders also hailed the chairman’s gesture, describing it as a strong demonstration of support for education and youth development in the area.
Several community and youth leaders noted that the reward would inspire more students across Agatu to pursue excellence in academics and intellectual engagements.
Observers within and outside Benue State have called for sustained investment in education and continuous support for talented young Nigerians.
