A former presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Chief Martin Onovo, has cautioned Nigerians against underestimating the capacity of the Nigerian military to tackle terrorism, insisting that the major obstacle to ending insurgency is a lack of political will.
Onovo, who is the Head of Policy Positions at the Movement for Fundamental Change, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
He spoke against the backdrop of the recent wave of kidnappings and abductions involving school teachers and students, particularly in Oyo State.
According to him, the Nigerian military has consistently maintained that it possesses the capability to defeat terrorist groups, raising questions about why the security challenge has persisted.
“If the military itself says it has the capacity, then the question becomes why the problem has lasted this long. The answer lies in political leadership,” he said.
Onovo argued that security agencies operate within the directives and framework established by political authorities, stressing that any perceived leniency or sympathy toward terrorists could undermine efforts to end insurgency.
He noted that the challenge was not the competence of the military, citing the professionalism and bravery demonstrated by Nigerian troops in domestic and international operations, including peacekeeping missions in Liberia and other conflict zones.
“What is required is clear political direction and unwavering commitment to defeating terrorism. If the Commander-in-Chief gives firm instructions and provides the necessary support, the security agencies have the capacity to effectively carry out their mandate,” he said.
The political activist also expressed reservations about the government’s policy of rehabilitating and reintegrating repentant terrorists, describing the approach as controversial.
He said many Nigerians were concerned that individuals involved in killings, kidnappings and destruction of property could be reintegrated into society without adequate justice and accountability.
Onovo further questioned the effectiveness of the broader security strategy, noting that reports often suggest security agencies are aware of the locations of terrorist camps and criminal hideouts.
“Where such intelligence exists, citizens naturally expect decisive action to neutralise the threat and rescue victims,” he said.
He maintained that Nigeria has sufficient military and security resources, including trained personnel, intelligence capabilities and operational experience, to confront terrorism effectively.
According to him, portraying the country as helpless without foreign assistance undermines national confidence, although international cooperation can complement domestic efforts.
“Every nation bears primary responsibility for its own security. Dependence on external powers should never replace the pursuit of self-reliance and the strengthening of domestic institutions,” he added.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Onovo urged political leaders to prioritise the protection of lives and property, restore security and demonstrate genuine commitment to ending terrorism and criminality across the country.
