The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Primary Election Appeals Committee in Kaduna State has affirmed Shuaibu Idris Mikati as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 elections and ordered fresh and rerun primaries in several constituencies where irregularities were established.
Chairman of the committee, Dr. Muhammed Mustapha Fagge, announced the decisions in Kaduna, saying the panel thoroughly reviewed petitions, documentary evidence, and submissions from aggrieved aspirants before reaching its conclusions.
According to him, the committee was guided by the principles of justice, transparency, inclusiveness, and internal democracy, stressing that no aspirant would be unfairly disadvantaged by procedural shortcomings.
Dr. Fagge said the committee unanimously upheld Mikati’s emergence as the ADC governorship candidate after confirming that he secured the highest number of valid votes during the primary election.
He added that evidence before the panel also revealed irregularities and fraudulent activities associated with some other aspirants, reinforcing the committee’s decision to affirm the outcome.
The committee equally ratified the victories of Tukur Salisu Kakeyi in the Zaria Federal Constituency primary and Muhammed Mahmoud Aliyu in the Soba Federal Constituency contest after confirming that both candidates obtained the highest number of valid votes.
However, several other primaries were declared inconclusive due to procedural breaches, omission of qualified aspirants, inadequate voting records, and other irregularities.
In the Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, the committee ordered a rerun after establishing that a qualified aspirant, Ibrahim Danlami Kubau, was excluded from the ballot. It also directed that a fresh primary election be conducted in Kaduna South Federal Constituency following findings that there was no sufficient evidence to prove that elections were held across all wards.
The committee further ordered reruns in affected wards and constituencies across Kaura, Soba, Ikara, Kajuru,
Badarawa/Malali, Magajin Gari II, Birnin Gwari, Tudun Wada West, Igabi, Kagarko, Kawo, Zaria, Chikun/Kajuru, and Kudan/Makarfi, among others.
On the Kaduna North Senatorial District primary, the committee ruled that any attempt to adopt a consensus or affirmation process would be invalid unless it enjoys the consent of all parties involved.
Dr. Fagge maintained that the committee’s decisions were reached strictly in accordance with available evidence and the party’s guidelines.
“Our decisions were reached strictly based on facts, evidence, and the provisions of the party’s guidelines. The committee remains committed to protecting the integrity of the ADC’s internal democratic process and ensuring that the will of party members prevails,” he said.
The committee’s verdict is expected to settle disputes arising from the party primaries, facilitate the conduct of reruns in affected areas, and strengthen confidence in the ADC’s internal democratic processes ahead of future elections in Kaduna State.
