Fresh allegations have emerged over the growing divisions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with a senior party official claiming that a disagreement between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, contributed to the party’s internal tensions.
Speaking on Symfoni TV, monitored in Abuja, the ADC’s Deputy National Financial Secretary, Oladimeji Fabiyi, alleged that Lawal sought financial backing from Atiku Abubakar for a proposed governorship ambition in Adamawa State, a request he claimed was declined.
According to Fabiyi, Atiku had initially expressed no opposition to Lawal’s reported interest in contesting for governor, insisting only that he participate in the party’s democratic processes, including primary elections.
However, Fabiyi alleged that relations became strained after Lawal reportedly requested N5 billion to support the ambition and Atiku indicated that he could not provide the funds.
The ADC official further claimed that efforts to accommodate Lawal’s demands during the party’s congresses came at a political cost, arguing that the party lost several influential figures in Adamawa State as a result.
Fabiyi’s remarks offer a new perspective on the disputes currently affecting the ADC, suggesting that disagreements over political ambitions and party structure may be at the heart of the ongoing crisis.
Neither Lawal nor Atiku had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
