2027: Sam Amadi raises alarm over internal party democracy

Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has expressed concern over the conduct of recent party primaries across the country, warning that the process has exposed deep weaknesses in Nigeria’s political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, monitored in Abuja, Amadi argued that many of the primaries failed to reflect democratic principles, alleging that powerful political actors often determined outcomes regardless of established party arrangements.
According to him, the controversies arising from the exercises have intensified internal disputes, weakened party cohesion, and raised questions about the ability of political parties to manage competing interests among members.
Amadi noted that in several cases, aspirants who appeared favoured by zoning arrangements or other party understandings were ultimately excluded from candidate lists, suggesting that the influence of governors and other political heavyweights often outweighs formal party processes.
He further observed that many parties lack the institutional strength required to enforce discipline and maintain stability, making them vulnerable to internal crises and leadership struggles.
The political analyst also pointed to the growing impact of defections and realignments within political parties. He argued that the arrival of influential politicians frequently alters existing power structures, sometimes displacing long-serving members and creating fresh tensions within party ranks.
Citing developments in Delta State, Amadi said the entry of former governor Ifeanyi Okowa into a new political arrangement had reshaped the political landscape and affected the fortunes of established figures such as Senator Ned Nwoko.
He maintained that such structural shifts, rather than performance alone, often determine political outcomes in Nigeria’s party system.
Amadi’s remarks add to the ongoing debate over the credibility of party primaries, a process widely regarded as crucial to strengthening democratic governance and ensuring that candidates emerge through transparent and competitive contests.
