Several elderly voters were left stranded during Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System failed to recognise their fingerprints and facial features, preventing them from casting their votes.
The incidents were reported in parts of Ado Ekiti, Ikere Ekiti and Iyin Ekiti, where aged voters who arrived early at polling units struggled unsuccessfully to complete the accreditation process.
At Ward 4, Units 1 and 2, Ijigbo, Ado Ekiti, and Ward 3, Unit 6, Osagburu, Ikere Ekiti, some voters said repeated attempts by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission to accredit them proved abortive.
One of the affected voters, 86-year-old Aliyu Sunday, arrived early at Ward 4, Unit 1, Ado Ekiti, but was unable to vote after the BVAS device reportedly failed to capture both his fingerprint and facial image.
A similar challenge confronted Mary Ajagbanla, said to be about 120 years old, at Ward 2, Unit 3, Iyin Ekiti, where the accreditation machine could not authenticate her identity.
Despite the setback, Ajagbanla remained resolute and refused to leave the polling unit.
“I arrived here around 9am, but I was told the machine could not read my face. I was asked to wait,” she said.
The elderly voter, who recalled participating in elections dating back several decades, insisted she would remain at the polling centre until she was given the opportunity to vote.
“I will wait. I won’t leave until I vote. I will be patient. I have been voting for long. I can remember I voted during Adebayo’s time as governor. I voted four years ago too,” she said.
The development raised concerns about the impact of technology-related challenges on voter participation, particularly among elderly citizens whose biometric details may have changed over time.
As voting continued across the state, affected voters expressed hope that the accreditation issues would be resolved to enable them exercise their constitutional right.
