The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recorded a commanding victory in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election, with its candidate, Olaka Nwogu, emerging winner by a wide margin.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Nwogu elected after he polled 47,961 votes, far ahead of his closest rivals in the contest.
Announcing the results at the senatorial district collation centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, Returning Officer Professor Rosemary Ogumade said the PDP candidate satisfied all constitutional requirements and was duly returned elected.
According to the results released by INEC, Douglas Fabeke of the Action Alliance (AA) scored 1,175 votes, while Osarosaka Ebenezer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 1,647 votes. The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Sam Kinani, polled 367 votes.
Nwogu’s overwhelming victory underscores the PDP’s continued dominance in the senatorial district and strengthens the party’s representation in the National Assembly.
The bye-election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Senator Barry Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District before his passing.
With his election, Nwogu is set to return to the Senate to represent the district and continue legislative activities on behalf of the people of the region.
The result marks a significant political boost for the PDP in Rivers State, where the party remains a major force in the state’s political landscape.
