The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has called for a thorough investigation into the death of a prominent leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church, Elder Omotayo Ezekiel Fajana, whose lifeless body was recently discovered in a hotel room in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.
The Authority expressed deep sadness and grave concern over the tragic and suspicious circumstances surrounding the elder’s death.
This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the Director-General of the NTDA, Ola Awakan, who extended his heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family, the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, and the people of Akungba-Akoko.
Awakan noted that the incident raises critical concerns about safety and security within Nigeria’s hospitality industry.
According to him, the circumstances surrounding the elder’s death, including the reported handling of his remains without proper medical certification and allegations of suspicious activities, require urgent clarification.
“Such events undermine public confidence in the hospitality sector and cannot be tolerated,” Awakan stated.
While commending the Ondo State Police Command for its swift action in arresting three suspects in connection with the case, he urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a transparent, professional, and comprehensive investigation.
“We must uncover the full circumstances surrounding this death, track the unauthorized movement of the body, and expose any possible lapses or acts of complicity,” he said.
The NTDA boss stressed that ensuring justice is served promptly is essential to restoring public confidence and deterring negligence or criminal conduct within the hospitality sector.
Awakan reassured the public that the safety and security of guests remain the Authority’s top priority. He stated that, as the apex tourism regulatory body in Nigeria, the NTDA is collaborating with law enforcement and other relevant security agencies to safeguard visitors and tourists across the country.
He further disclosed that the Authority would reactivate its nationwide monitoring and compliance exercises in partnership with state governments to ensure strict adherence to safety standards in hospitality establishments.
The Director-General reiterated the NTDA’s commitment to working closely with hotel operators, security agencies, and community leaders to promote a safe, responsible, and thriving tourism environment throughout Nigeria.
