The Kebbi State Government has sought closer collaboration with Peoples Media Limited, publishers of the Peoples Daily newspapers, to combat misinformationand promote factual reporting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of Peoples Media Limited in Abuja on Wednesday.
Ahmed said the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the state government and the media organisation to ensure wider dissemination of government programmes and achievements.
He commended Peoples Media Limited for its consistent coverage of developments in Kebbi State, describing the organisation as a dependable partner in projecting the state’s image.
According to him, Kebbi remains a strategic agrarian state whose development story deserves greater visibility, particularly as the administration of Governor Nasir Idris continues to implement projects across key sectors.
He said that the present administration had fulfilled about 95 per cent of its campaign promises after nearly three years in office, citing improvements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, security, youth development, tourism and commerce.
Ahmed, however, expressed concern over what he described as an increasing wave of misinformation allegedly being sponsored by political opponents ahead of the next election cycle.
He alleged that some politicians, in a bid to gain power, were circulating false narratives and using criminal elements to spread fabricated stories aimed at discrediting the state government and creating panic among residents.
The commissioner urged the media to uphold professionalism by promoting balanced and factual reports rather than amplifying unverified claims.
“We appeal for your support in ensuring that these false narratives are not amplified, but instead that factual and balanced reporting is encouraged,” he said.
Responding, the Managing Director of Peoples Media Limited, Alhaji Maharazu Ahmed, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to responsible journalism and its long-standing relationship with Kebbi State.
He said the media organisation would continue to support credible reporting on the state while strengthening cooperation with the government to counter misinformatio.
Ahmed added that Peoples Media remained committed to keeping its doors open to the Kebbi State Government and sustaining a partnership built over the years on mutual trust and professionalism.
