• Says it’s new era of clean water for FCT satellite towns
By Stanley Onyekwere
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the landmark Bwari Township Water Supply Network Project, signaling a major shift toward decentralizing development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the President declared that access to clean water is a fundamental right and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that basic infrastructure reaches every underserved community in the nation’s capital.
The project is 198 kilometers of state-of-the-art pipeline, linked directly to the Lower Usuma Dam treated water source, targeted at reaching homes in Bwari, Ushafa, and surrounding satellite areas.
For decades, infrastructural development has been heavily concentrated in Abuja’s glittering city center, leaving outer satellite communities to rely on untreated boreholes and local streams, but Tinubu stressed that under his Renewed Hope Agenda, that this disparity is officially over.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is not a slogan. It is a contract. It is a deliberate, calculated, and unyielding commitment to governance that works for the people.
“For too long, the narrative of Abuja has been a tale of two cities—a glittering centre surrounded by underserved communities. We said no. That era is gone,” the President stated.
The President promised that this “water revolution” is just getting started, with plans already underway to expand the network to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Abaji before the end of his administration’s tenure.
Tinubu showered praise on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, calling him “Mr. Project” for his relentless drive in accelerating infrastructure delivery.
According to him, beyond boosting the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue, Wike has managed the simultaneous execution of dozens of landmark projects.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Wike noted that the Bwari project marks the third major water intervention under this administration, following the rehabilitation of the Abuja city water system and the Karu satellite town water network.
50 Major Projects: Officially commissioned since Tinubu took office in May 2023.
10 More on the Way: Slated for completion and inauguration before next year’s election campaigns kick off.”You can be a minister, but without the support of the President, it is difficult to perform. Mr. President has given the FCT all the support required to change the narrative, and we will not disappoint him,” Wike stated.
Similarly, FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, and the Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, both emphasized that the project will significantly improve public health by reducing waterborne diseases and eliminating the costly reliance on private boreholes.
